A US Army demolitions mission in Nazi-occupied Italy goes awry, leaving only the commanding officer, Turner, alive He is saved by a group of orphaned children from Reanoto, a town whose population was massacred by the SS In return for helping him blow up a dam, Turner agrees to train the kids in the use of guns so they can get revenge on Taussig, the cruel SS commander who ordered their families killed
